Acupuncture for Anxiety in Edmonton

March 18, 2016/0 Comments/in Chiropractic Blog /by Dr. Kent Ferguson

Anxiety disorders can develop for a number of reasons. The origin of Generalized Anxiety Disorder or panic disorder can be stress related, or it can be due to chemical imbalances associated with a developing health issue. While anxiety medication is helpful as a coping tool, it is not without some risk. If you have recently been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, considering acupuncture as part of your treatment is a good idea. Here are some of the reasons why.

How Acupuncture Works

Acupuncture is based on the understanding that health requires a proper emotional and physical balance in the body. The energy field of the body is in perfect sync when nothing interferes with that energy flow. Illness comes about when some sort of blockage takes place. The best way to deal with the situation is remove the block and restore the proper flow.

Acupuncture does this by using thin needles at various points in the body known as meridians. Inserting the needles at points understood to relate to the mind and the nervous system removes whatever is preventing the body from healing. As this relates to anxiety disorders, the treatments restore the energy flow needed to produce as reasonable amount of neurotransmitters and calm the mind.

What to Expect During the First Treatment

Many patients who seek acupuncture as a way to treat anxiety find that the mind racing associated with the condition begins to calm during the first session. The needles cause no discomfort while the calm and controlled atmosphere provides a sense of peace that anxiety sufferers find hard to achieve. This benefit alone makes the sessions worth the time and effort.

 How About Later?

As the sessions continue, the patient notices that the periods of feeling calm and back to normal last for a longer period of time. It is easier to return to places where panic attacks occurred and find that they do not happen again.

As first one and then another place is reclaimed as being what anxiety sufferers call safe places, the fear of an attack occurring begins to fade. What was reduced to a limited existence by the anxiety is suddenly a much larger world with nothing to fear and everything to look forward to enjoying.

If you are living with anxiety in Edmonton, contact the Oliver Chiropractic Wellness Clinic today by calling 780-455-2112. With the right combination of treatments, you’ll soon be on the way to feeling normal again.

Acupuncture for Menopause in Edmonton

February 19, 2016/0 Comments/in Chiropractic Blog /by Dr. Kent Ferguson

Acupuncture is a key element in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that involves thin needles that are inserted into the body at acupuncture points and energy channels. Through the centuries, this amazing alternative medicine has been used for various ailments like chronic pain, weight loss, anxiety, migraines and menopause. Today, many use acupuncture for maintenance and prevention as well as helping with specific symptoms.

What is more, recent studies show that a holistic method such as acupuncture can ease various menopausal symptoms.

Mood Imbalances
When rendering the principles behind acupuncture, hormonal imbalances emerge when the internal balance of Yin-Yang energy is broken or interrupted. The objective of acupuncture is to rebalance and strengthen Yin-Yang within the body. When the internal balance is restored, irritability and mood swings are drastically reduced or eliminated.

Reduces Hot Flashes
According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, acupuncture can reduce hot flash up to 35 percent. Numerous other studies found acupuncture to be extremely effective in reducing the frequency and severity of hot flashes. In fact, many claim that the effects were not reliant on the number of treatment or the length of treatment. Plus the effects lasted up to three months.

Better Sleep
Insomnia is quite common when faced with a hormonal imbalance. Fortunately, even chronic insomnia can be treated effectively with acupuncture. In fact, studies show acupuncture can reduce sleep problems and help regulate hormones. In addition, acupuncture is renowned for its ability to help with night sweats by balancing Yin-Yang.

Fatigue
Sometimes menopause can cause fatigue. However, many menopausal patients using a short sequence of regular appointments (weekly) reported an obvious increase in energy plus a decrease in fatigue.
Spider and Varicose Veins

For centuries, acupuncture has been known to improve circulation and open pathways throughout the body. And by stimulating the blood flow in certain areas with acupuncture, spider and varicose vein can be greatly reduced.

Feel Better and Improve Well-being with Deep Tissue Massage

January 14, 2016/0 Comments/in Chiropractic Blog /by Dr. Kent Ferguson

Deep tissue massage in EdmontonGetting a massage can be an enjoyable, relaxing experience. While there are different types of massage, a deep tissue massage has many benefits for both your mood and your health.

Reduces Stress

When muscles are manipulated during a massage, it helps to release any tension that has built up in the affected muscles. A deep tissue massage can get to underlying areas to help reduce stress. This type of manipulation has been shown in research studies to lower both blood pressure and heart rate for increased relaxation. Deep tissue massage can also lower cortisol levels in the body to reduce stress.

Improves Mood

During a deep tissue massage, the stimulation of the muscles causes the brain to release certain feel-good chemicals, such as oxytocin and serotonin. These hormones are known to promote overall good feelings to reduce anxiety and depression. These chemicals can also promote relaxation, which can help to reduce insomnia and to improve your sleep.

Decreases Chronic Pain

With a deep tissue massage, underlying muscle tension is alleviated. As the muscles relax, any pull on connective tissue is also eased, thereby helping to reduce related joint pain. Additionally, this massage technique helps to reduce inflammation to help in pain reduction.

Promotes Healing

With a deep tissue massage comes an increase in circulation. This allows for greater blood flow to any injured areas of the body to promote healing. Toxins are released, which can also help to reduce inflammation and pain. Deep tissue massage also allows for proper drainage of the lymphatic system. Continued therapy sessions can also break down and remove painful scar tissue from the body.

A deep tissue massage involves direct touch and can be a calming, relaxing experience. You can enjoy the health and wellness benefits associated with a deep tissue massage. Simply call Oliver Chiropractic Wellness Clinic at  780-455-2112 to book your appointment.

Preventing Skiing and Snowboarding injuries with Chiropractic treatment

December 16, 2015/1 Comment/in Chiropractic Blog /by Dr. Kent Ferguson

When it comes to winter sports, nothing compares to the popularity, health benefits, and fun of skiing and snowboarding. As with most thrilling sporting activities, there is always present a risk of injury to be mitigated with preventative measures. One such measure are preventative chiropractic visits.

As with all sports, your back and spine are integral to your ability to perform. When these extremely important areas are not functioning at an optimal level, your body will subconsciously compensate for the slight changes and you will begin to ski or snowboard differently. Seeing as this minute difference often goes unnoticed, you are now at risk for injury as your posture, stance, or riding style is not in its natural position.

To prevent this, it is important to visit your chiropractor regularly, not just when there seems to be an issue. Even the slightest misalignment can have an enormous impact on your ability to ski or ride your best. When you’re not riding your best, you are at risk.

If you’re an avid skier or snowboarder who visits the slopes several times a week, you should be paying particular attention to your spinal health with regularly scheduled chiropractic checkups at least every few weeks. Remember, it is not ideal to be participating in heavy activity within a few hours of an adjustment, so schedule your visits accordingly!

For those folks who make only a few large ski trips per year, and who do not normally visit a chiropractor, it is important to get checked out a few weeks prior to your big trip. Some adjustments can take several visits to be effective, and you will certainly want to be as healthy as possible during your vacation to the mountains. Ideally, you will also visit your chiropractor after your slope-side holiday as well to ensure that your spine is still in tip top shape.

Remember, you can’t prevent every mishap on the slopes, but you can do your due diligence when it comes to preventing your spinal health getting in the way. When it’s time to head to the mountains, book an appointment at Oliver Chiropractic Wellness Clinic in Edmonton by calling [sc name=”tel-ocwc”]!

Back Pain? Chiropractor or Massage Therapist?

November 13, 2015/0 Comments/in Chiropractic Blog /by Dr. Kent Ferguson

Anyone who has suffered moderate to severe back pain knows it can range from discomfort to absolutely debilitating. Many people find themselves in a doctor’s office or even an Emergency room seeking quick relief of their back pain. Often they are sent home with pain pills, muscle relaxants and instructions to “take it easy.” Though the quick relief may be welcome, it does not address the root of the problem, and the false sense of relief may even make it worse.

When to Use a Massage Therapist:

• The pain is muscular in nature, possibly from overwork or stress
• The pain is caused by a muscle spasm
• The pain is not chronic or debilitating
• You do not have a history of back pain

A Massage Therapist will be able to increase the blood flow that will help stop a spasm and loosen the muscles to promote faster healing.

When to Use a Chiropractor:

• There is a notable problem with body alignment
• Your posture or mobility is impacted
• The pain is caused by an injury or accident
• The pain is caused by repetitive motion-(office workers and musicians are prime candidates)
• You have a history of back pain
• You have a family history of back problems, such as scoliosis

A Chiropractor will help your condition long term with proper diagnosis, alignment and adjustment techniques and provide you with at home exercises to help manage your condition. He may also inform you of what exercises and activities to avoid to aid in your recovery. If you follow the prescribed program, your Chiropractor provides, you will also help prevent further occurrences.

We all experience occasional aches and pains and sometimes a hot bath and a good night’s sleep is all that is needed. But if the pain continues or increases it is best to seek help from a professional. Start your recovery today!
